An Evening with the Legends of West Bromwich Albion Hosted by Frank Skinner

It was a night of blue and white striped nostalgia as lifelong Baggies fan Frank Skinner led the Albion faithful on a trip down memory lane honouring three of their greatest sons.

Over 800 West Bromwich Albion supporters packed into Birmingham Town Hall to help raise money towards The Celebration Statue, a living tribute to the club’s pioneering black players - Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson – who paved the way for the success of today’s black players in English football.

Their teammates including Tony ‘Bomber’ Brown, John Wile, Ally Robertson and Willie Johnston and former boss ‘Big’ Ron Atkinson joined in the nostalgia trip during the evening.

Each was given a rapturous welcome during the two and a half hour show as they proved to be as entertaining on stage as they were on the football pitch over 30 years ago.

Highlight of the night was Regis and Batson sitting with Frank Skinner on stage to talk about life at the height of their fame in a Baggies shirt. It was a poignant look back as they not only discussed what it was like to be part of that great Albion team but also how they motivated themselves to overcome the racist abuse they encountered from the football terraces in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

Frank Skinner said: “The Celebration Statue is a fantastic concept and tonight was a perfect example of the appreciation and mutual respect that exists between this group of former players and the fans of West Bromwich Albion’

As the crowd left the Town Hall after the final curtain one dedicated fan was overheard to say ‘I have been supporting the Baggies for over 40 years and I have never enjoyed myself so much as I did tonight ‘…………..he was not the only one !!
The evening was a tribute to the Albion’s “Three Degrees”, superbly orchestrated by Frank Skinner, the show was perfection personified and we must congratulate all, including Jim Cadman the brains behind Celebration Statue 79, in giving the 800 plus in attendance an evening never to forget.
